Sony aims to beat Samsung in India
December 22, 2010
Struggling to return to the top of the game Sony Corp aims to surpass Samsung Electronics Co this year as the top seller of flat-screen TVs in India. Sony is already lagging behind Samsung in the manufacture and sale of cellular phones.
According to research firm Display Research, Sony Corp has made a deviation from its previous strategy of focusing on India’s wealthiest shoppers. Now, Sony is getting a bigger bite of the consumer pie by offering the Indian market cheaper models and expanding its distribution network. Sony Corp ranked only number three third in India in 2009, behind Samsung and LG Electronics Inc.
Sony’s new strategy and expansion program is part of a more comprehensive business move by other larger move by Japanese companies, among them Toshiba Corp. Japanese firms are battling South Korean rivals in entering and exploiting into emerging markets. Despite the new aggressive tactics, however, Sony CVorpo might still have to weather a few more storms because of the weak consumer recovery in the US and Europe. These two markets are traditionally Sony’s main strongholds. Sony Corp televisions have been suffering from a six-year losing streak.
