Smartphone Plans of Nokia

January 31, 2011

Nokia is now considering strategy changes in its existing smartphone
segment. In this regard, Nokia has also indicated its plans to tie up with another company. According to the company’s chief executive officer Stephen Elop, there have been changes in the phone industry and hence, Nokia also needs to adapt quickly to this new situation. The high end products of the company will run on its MeeGo OS, based on Linux, which was developed in partnership with Intel. Details pertaining to Nokia’s MeeGo
products will be disclosed on February 11, 2011, at the time of the
company’s meeting with its investors.

Nokia firmly believes that though distribution, cost and scale is important for low end devices, developers and ecosystem is very crucial for high end devices. The term ecosystem implies a smartphone platform that is advantageous for large scale application development, has a store selling apps, and tends to tie down users since they get habituated with the apps on one platform and hence, do not want to change to another. In this regard, Nokia should either create an ecosystem of its own or should join one.
