iPhones with Wi-Fi launched by China Unicom

August 10, 2010

It has been recently reported that China Unicom will be launching iPhone with Wi-Fi capabilities. Earlier, the company has only rolled out the iPhone without Wi-Fi because they wanted to promote Wapi, which is their homegrown technology.

Earlier the government had made a decision which stated that all the mobile phones which will be used in China will have Wapi technology instead of Wi-Fi. But this decision of government received an outcry from the IT world and their aim to get Wapi recognized as international standard failed.

Later on the rules were relaxed and it was stated by the government that devices with Wi-Fi are allowed to be used but they imposed a condition that they must also offer the Wapi technology.

The iPhones in China are being offered by Unicom since October, 2009 but the sales were very low because the customers preferred the import of the device which proved to be cheaper for them and also came with Wi-Fi facility. But now, Unicom is all set to offer iPhone with Wi-Fi in China from 9th of August, this year.

Google Inc, due to its public wrangling with the Chinese Government is not only facing the risk of losing access to its PCs in China but there is also a risk to the company for losing the toehold in the world’s largest mobile phone market. The technology giant from US has been providing its android OS for free to the Chinese handset manufacturers in a hope to penetrate the country where large numbers of people are expected to access internet through their cell phones than on their desktop PCs.

Though it is second on computer searches but Google is almost tied for the first with the China’s Baidu Inc in order to have market share in China’s promising sector of mobile search. There are an increasing number of people in China who are relying on their smartphones for telephone as well as computer services including searching the web and surfing.

The Google’s step of redirecting the Chinese internet users to an uncensored search engine in Hong Kong has raised the ire of Beijing that can lead to the ambitions of the company in danger.

As per analysts the government of China can pressurize the partners to sever their ties with the company and Google has acknowledged the possibility of their products being blocked by censors any day. After the pressure by the Chinese Government, Google also stated that it would delay its Chinese mobile application that would run on Android Phone. Thus by leaving China, Google will also have to face the risk of losing out other potential opportunities in the country.
