Bharti Airtel launches IMEWE submarine cable

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications firm has succeeded in launching its new IMEWE (India- Middle East- Western Europe) cable system. With a design capacity of 3.84 terabits per second, it’s the  most advanced cable connecting India to Italy and France in Western Europe via the Middle East.

According to company spokespersons, the deployment of the cable system allows Bharti airtel to meet the constantly increasing connectivity needs of its clients  to connect to the Middle East and European countries. Even though its i2i and SEAMEWE4 cable systems are already in operation and providing connectivity to these markets, IMEWE is said to give alternate routes  to allow the fulfillment of bandwidth requirements of clients at any given time.

Ajay Chitkara, Bharti airtels CEO for Global Data Business says that the company’s investment in IMEWE is proof if its commitment to continuously provide  scalable solutions for their customers. “The new cable system is an important milestone in the telecommunications infrastructure.”

IBM, Spanco and Tech Mahindra hired by Bharti for the customer care services in Africa

Bharti Airtel has recently stated that the company has tied up with Tech Mahindra, IBM and Spanco so as to get the services of customer care in 16 of the African countries where Bharti has acquired the Zain Telecom.

The financial details are not yet disclosed by Bharti and they stated that agreement will be soon finalised. As per the deal, the work of customer care services including the back office processes and call centre of Zain brand which is present in 16 African countries will be outsourced by Bharti to these 3 firms.

The outsourcing of the customer care services by Bharti will not only lead to the tangible benefits to the company but will also create wide array of job opportunities so as to give a boost to the local talent.

At present, Bharti Airtel has engaged more than 4000 people to carry out its operations of customer service in Africa.

Bharti Airtel to launch 3G services before the end of this year

Bharti Airtel which is the largest telecom company by users in the country has recently stated that the company will launch its 3G services before the end of this year, 2010. With this announcement, Airtel has become the 3rd private operator to make an announcement about its plan to launch the 3G services as Tata Teleservices and Vodafone Essar has already done so.

During the auction of the 3G services, Bharti Airtel was successful in winning the bid for 13 circles out of total of 22 and these included Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. These metros accounts for21% of the total traffic of the data in the country.

High speed HSPA networks will be deployed by Bharti and these network services will be provided by Nokia Siemens, Ericsson and Huawei.  The 3G services will enable the users to enjoy multimedia capabilities on the mobile network. Bharti Airtel also stated that the service area of 3G will contribute 68% of the revenue to the company.

Bharti Airtel moves out from Bulk SMS business

Bharti Airtel has recently made an announcement that they are moving out from the business of bulk SMS so as to look after the convenience of their users. This decision has come when DoT and Trai are not able to find out the ways from getting freedom from the commercial calls and messages.

The business of bulk SMS in India is expected to be of around Rs. 20 crore monthly. With its announcement of moving out from the bulk SMS business, Bharti will become the first telecom operator to do so and this decision may also motivate other operators to move on the same path.

The CEO of Bharti Airtel, Mr. Sanjay Kapoor stated that “For us, the bulk SMS business case doesn’t stack up against our priority for the customer. We wanted to take a leadership position in this area as pesky calls and messages have become a huge irritant for consumers.”

He also made a suggestion that in order to discourage the operators a termination charge of 5 piase to 10 paise per SMS should be levied which will eventually raise the cost and high penalties should be charged for calling the customers who have registered for the Do Not Call Registry.

Picocells brought In India by Bharti Airtel

Airtel Mobile Will have Nokia’s Ovi Life Tools

Airtel has recently come together with Nokia so as to provide the services of Ovi Life Tools to its subscribers. After this association, the Airtel subscribers will be able to activate the Ovi Life tools on their handset and the service will be available with a starting pack of Rs.10. The Nokia’s Ovi Life Tools comes with a wide range of personalized and innovative services which provides information on Agriculture, Entertainment and Education for the urban and the rural consumers.

The Ovi Life Tools Services can be accessed from wide range of Nokia handset which includes entry level mobiles as well and the service is available in 11 different Indian languages which provide convenience to the users.

On Airtel, the Ovi Life Tools services for agriculture will include weather updates, crop advisory, personalized agri related information and others. On education it will include information on English learning, GK, exam preparation modules and others. The entertainment section will include ringtones, RBT, jokes and others.

Bharti Airtel will Buy, Telecom Seychelles for $62 million

Bharti Airtel has recently stated that they will buy 100% stake in Telecom Seychelles for an amount of $62 million which is around Rs.288 crore. Some time ago, Bharti had also acquired the assets in Zain Telecom of Africa for $10.7 billion and this recent acquisition shows the continuing interest of the company to spread itself in the International market.

The CEO (International) and Joint MD of Bharti Airtel, Manoj Kohli stated that the company has approved the deal of acquisition and he also stated that “We are delighted at the addition of Seychelles to our Africa portfolio. Telecom Seychelles has world-class operations that include state-of-the art 3G services. These operations will benefit further by leveraging the efficiencies of scale of our African operations.”

With this deal with Telecom Seychelles now Bharti Airtel will be able to expand its footprint in Africa in 16 countries and will have total presence in 19 nations.

Survey States that Bharti Airtel is number one

A recent survey, conducted by the journal, “Voice and Data” stated that Bharti Airtel has retained its position of being the number one telecom company in the country in the year 2009-10.

Among the major 10 telecom players, Aircel was successful in recording the highest growth with 37.2 % which lead to revenue of Rs. 4700 crore. With this achievement, Aircel has now moved to the slot of number 8 in the list. In the year 2009-10, Bharti Airtel was again at the top with revenue of Rs.38, 800 crore.

As per the reports, BSNL has faced 14% drop in its revenue with Rs.30,240 but it was able to retain the position of number 2.

The third spot in the list was bagged by Vodafone with growth rate of 13.7% that earned revenue of Rs. 23,200 crore.

The 4th position was grabbed by Reliance Communications who had revenue of Rs.22,130 crore but reported 3.5% of negative growth.

Idea Cellular, Tata Communications and Tata Teleservices stood at the position of number 5, 6 and 7 respectively.
