It has been recently reported that China Unicom will be launching iPhone with Wi-Fi capabilities. Earlier, the company has only rolled out the iPhone without Wi-Fi because they wanted to promote Wapi, which is their homegrown technology.

Earlier the government had made a decision which stated that all the mobile phones which will be used in China will have Wapi technology instead of Wi-Fi. But this decision of government received an outcry from the IT world and their aim to get Wapi recognized as international standard failed.

Later on the rules were relaxed and it was stated by the government that devices with Wi-Fi are allowed to be used but they imposed a condition that they must also offer the Wapi technology.

The iPhones in China are being offered by Unicom since October, 2009 but the sales were very low because the customers preferred the import of the device which proved to be cheaper for them and also came with Wi-Fi facility. But now, Unicom is all set to offer iPhone with Wi-Fi in China from 9th of August, this year.
