As far as the expansion of India’s telecom industry is concerned, it
has crossed the landmarks. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority
of India (TRAI), in India, the number of mobile phone subscribers has
crossed 700 million in October this year. Given the fact that India
has a population of more than one billion, seven out of ten Indians
use mobile phones. However, the mobile phone connections may not be
spread uniformly since there are many people who use more than one
number. In addition, the probability of Indians less than five years
old using mobile phones is low.
As per TRAI data, India has added about 19 million cellphone
subscribers in October 2010. This indicates an increase in mobile
phone subscribers from 687.7 million at the end of September to 706.68
million. If the number of subscribers continues to increase at this
rate, India may be a little short of 750 million mobile phone
connections by the dawn of 2011.
