June 1, 2010
Thousands of mobile users in Ghana recently have hit the streets in order to protest against the poor quality of mobile phone services all over the country. This protest was organized by the Consumer Protection Agency of the nation along with the other customer rights group. Threat has been given by the groups that they may arrange another protest as well if the quality of the service is not improved.
The Ghanaians, as the part of the protest were encouraged to switch off their mobile phones from 6 in the morning till midnight on the day of the protest and during this time the CPA dubbed it as “Ghana off Phone Day”.
It has been stated by CPA that in spite of various repeated complaints the telecom operators, lawmakers and regulators has done nothing so as to improve the quality of the service which is offered to the people.
The mobile operators including TiGo, MTN, Vodafone, Kasapa and Zain suffered a revenue loss of $6million due to the mass switch off.
