Google fails to revolutionize the cellphone market by launching Nexus One handsets

May 15, 2010

Google has recently announced that it will bring an end to its online sales of its Nexus One handset shortly. The company will still display Android phones on its official site, but purchasing procedure will be done the traditional method via mobile service providers.

Google’s direct sales model was an effort to drastically alter the business model for mobile handsets. The company was trying to cut out the network, rather than buying a phone from a carrier with a contract and a subsidized up-front cost. Customers would purchase the phone directly from Google, by paying the full up-front fee, and then putting in a SIM of their preference.

This, however, overlooked the realities of the cell phone market, as the company soon revealed. Its approach to tech support—send an e-mail and maybe get an answer sooner or later—was always destined to be failed. Given how important phones are to our daily lives and lifestyles, that was never going to be acceptable as there isn’t even anyone to call.
