93 Cell phones per 100 people in Brazil

A telecommunications regulator in Brazil has stated that the number of mobile phone connections in the country has reached to a number of 180 million which also states that there are 93.8 mobile phone per 100 people. Anatel telecommunications regulator in a statement also said that in the first 4 months of 2010 a total of 6.8 million phone lines were activated.

The only parts of the country where per person has more than one cell phone are the southwest and the central western regions which are highly industrialized and is also the location of the capital Brasilia.

The penetration in southern Brazil is 98.51 whereas the northwest and Amazon region have the lowest penetration rates of wireless. Around 82.36% of the lines are pre paid connections.

By the end of April 2010, the Vivo Company which is owned by Portugal Telecom and Spain’s Telefonica was the leader with the share of 30.14% which was then followed by Claro with 25.47% share.
