Mobile Phone History

January 9, 2010

Mobile phone is the brain child of radio technology. Development of the radio technology has made way for hand held cellular communicating device.

It all started by the introduction of hexagonal cell invention at the AT&T by the Bell lab Engineers (Douglas H. Ring and W. Rae. Young). In the year 1945 the 0G generation of mobile phones were started. These phones were not successful due to its inability to change its channel frequency when ever user moved from one cell to another.

The short coming of the 0G generation cell phones was overcome in 1970. It was the call from Dr. Martin Cooper (a Motorola Employee) to Joel. S. Angel while walking through the streets of New York which marked the foundation of 1st generation mobiles. Motorola has a long history in the field of Mobiles. Right from the two way radios to the automotive radios they have left long lasting impact on the Mobile Industry.

The facet of mobile phones totally changed in the 1990s. Mobile phone systems such as GSM, IS-136 (“TDMA”), iDEN and IS-95 (“CDMA”) were introduced. In 1991 the first GSM network (Radiolinja) opened in Finland. The second generation mobiles introduced a new feature called the SMS (Short Message Service) through which the sender could send short text messages through the communication channel.

As the mobile technology started growing and the mobiles now had the facility of Internet and a faster transfer rate. The technology used during this time had a change in the requirements rather than a change in technology. This technology was called 3G.

The mobile technology is still growing leaps and bounds, the 4G technology has already crept into the market. Operating Systems like the Android, Blackberry have made life easier and merrier for the customers. The technology  is growing at a very fast rate, run with it or you will lose it!
