Mobile Phones without IMEI numbers blocked in India

December 21, 2009

The government of India has decided to block all mobile phones that do not possess the IMEI code sighting security reasons. What is the IMEI?  The International Mobile Equipment Identity number is a unique code with 15 digits that is indicated on the operator’s network when a call is made.

It is usually found at the back o the phone near the battery in branded phones. It helps in tracing the identity of the caller, the phone and indicates the call details, without this it is impossible to do that and offers room for criminals to use these phones without being traced.

Almost 30% of the phones in India are unbranded and are mostly imports from China and are preferred because of their cost. When the Government decided to block these phones approximately 25 million people were affected. The government said that militant groups had used these phones in crimes around the country.

Most of the people affected complained that they had no knowledge that their phones were without the number. The Cellular Operators association requested for an extension of time, so that they can embark on registering the phones without IMEI codes. India’s phone market is the fastest growing in the world with approximately more than 450 million subscribers.
